NUMB3RS Comes to ISPCON --- And Your Data Center

Wed, 14 May 2008 11:28:00 -0400

Possibly you have seen the TV drama NUMB3RS (CBS Friday) and met Charlie Eppes. He is that ex-child prodigy that riddles off obscure math theories and saves the day for the FBI and that guy from Northern Exposure. There is always an algorithm in the mix, you know the stuff you and I write in the mist on the shower door.

Enter stage left is Julie Bellancam a real life Charlie Epps, but in the guise of a mild mannered MIT grad. That Julie Bellanca the Product Design Director for Cleversafe. Julie Bellanca the articulate, intriguing and driving force leading a Cleversafe team of almost 40 (probably also MIT grads) that have written some great algorithms that may have the chance to reinvent the data center industry

She actually used the word “slice and dice data”……when she told me “Our technology, called Information Dispersal, works similarly to TCP/IP packets--that is, we store information on data slices, storing these slices on a network of local or remote servers. So, information is, well, dispersed.” Words actually from the website but it sound just like Julie.

So what is the big deal? This is how I understand the magic…Lets say you are a data storage firm and have three big data centers (you don’t have to be big but I like big number3s). These three data centers each have 33,334 servers. You own 100,002 servers. 50,001 of them are in some effect useless because they back up the data for the other 50k.

One server goes down ----- ok a whole data center gets hit by a tsunami…global warming is everywhere. Live is good, the server in Austin has the data lost in San Diego (sorry San Diego), yes the critical data for Abercrombie & Fitch is saved.

Cleversafe has another approach --- and you only need 50,001 servers. You stuff the data in small slices in maybe 18 locations. When the tsunami hits San Diego, Cleversafe’s equipment, software and knowledge can fill in the blanks…you lose nothing…you save 50,000 servers. Algorithms…magical recreation. Are these mathematicians or alchemists?

Cleversafe released this product in Q1 2008. Neat stuff, new stuff, you want one.

And now you know how they fill in those little data holes in the opening of NUMB3RS.

Warning to all: 'latest' RHEL4 OpenVZ Kernel has a root exploit!

Wed, 11 Oct 2006 13:24:01 -0400

Background:
OpenVZ is a (stripped down) free, open-source version of Virtuozzo linux virtualization software. The modified OpenVZ kernel allows server operators to partition their servers into multiple Virtual Environments running a different Linux distribution.

Outdated Kernel:
As of now (Oct 10th, 2006) the latest Kernel listed on the RHEL4 download page (version 2.6.9-023stab016.2) is vulnerable to a root exploit that was first reported in July of 2006. That means that OpenVZ has had the vulnerable kernel available for download for around 3 months!

Response from OpenVZ: (*UPDATE*)
The response from OpenVZ was quick & effective - we contacted them at around 10PM on Oct 10th and by 6AM on October 11th (~ 8 hours) they released an updated version (2.6.9-023stab030.1). This does not negate the fact that a vulnerable kernel was left available for download for ~3 months, but I am quite pleased with their response.

update 2: OpenVZ sent an email to their list today (October 11th) at around 1PM EST saying "Everybody using 023 kernel is advised to upgrade." - perhaps they should have mentioned the root exploit in the email as a reason to drive people to upgrade.

Damage:
This only effected the OpenVZ kernels, not the Virtuozzo kernels. Our paid Virtuozzo installations were in the 2.6.8 branch which was not affected. A handful of our OpenVZ servers running 2.6.9 were vulnerable - we've updated them immediately. Unfortunately we became aware of this because one of the servers was actually exploited.

Server Security & Incident Tracking:
It goes without saying that if an attacker manages to get root access to a server, somewhere a sysadmin will forgo a night of sleep trying to recover.

'root' access to a server is absolute - root is the ultimate Unix user. Once an attacker gains root access, he/she can do anything. Cleaning a box that has had a root exploit is a nightmare, and many will argue not even possible. Because the 'root' user has the ability to modify anything on the system, any system binary can be replaced with a trojan'd version. Any configuration file can be changed to allow an attacker access through an unexpected port, ssh keys can be added to let an attacker in and cronjobs can be put in place to ensure that their exploits will stick around even if a sysadmin deletes them. An attacker can add a new user to /etc/passwd with uid '0' (root). The list goes on (and I don't want to give malicious people any more ideas!)

Having a malicious entity gain 'root' access to a server is a worst-case scenario for any system administrator.

How do you know if you were rooted?
There are many obvious signs:

  • log files disappear
  • suspicious processes are running on the server
  • programs with names like 'sendmail' are running on a non-standard port
  • files will be modified

Many system administrators will just know when something does not feel right.

What can you do?

Arguably the most important thing that must be done after an attack is finding the source of the exploit; what php script was exploited? what kernel bug was exploited? etc If you don't close the security hole, the hackers will just jump back in.

There are many ways that you can diagnose your system for changes and unusual activity:

  • Check the logs (assuming they weren't deleted)
  • use the unix 'find' command to search for files that have been modified or created in the last X days
  • use RPM --verify (if you are running an RPM-based distribution) to verify that binary files are not replaced malicious ones
  • Use 'netstat -apn' to look at incoming and outgoing sockets and inspect the output for unusual items.
  • hire someone who has experience in these situations

Most of the time attackers don't clean up after themselves - while they will delete the server logs to cover their tracks, they will leave behind the scripts that they use - these will be invaluable tools to discover how they exploited your system. Time stamps are also keys to finding out what was changed or added to your system.

"Why did the hacker choose me!"
This is a common question that we get from shared hosting customers who have vulnerable PHP scripts or forums. The answer is, these low-lifes have automated tools that search the internet for vulnerable scripts & forums - and then they notify the attacker of the vulnerabilities so that attacker can proceed.

Most of the time (especially in mass-defacing situations) attacker doesn't have a grudge against your personal website and they are not targeting your website for any reason other than it is vulnerable.

Most of the attackers that we have dealt with have 1 goal: replace all website files with their own political or religious messages.... and to gloat to their underground, hacker friends.

What is even worse is that you have websites with archives of hacks and records of what hacker defaced what website in the form of a competition - which hackers have defaced the most websites today? Websites shouldn't be encouraging hackers to increase their hack count!

Hacking in a Hosting Environment
In the context of a web hosting situation, there are 2 important types of exploits:
* 'localized' Exploits
* Server-Wide Exploits

An example of a "'localized' exploit" would be when a customer who is running an outdated PHP script gets attacked. The customer then gains access to the customers username and overwrites their files, can read their emails & confidential files, etc. For a web hosting company, this is expected and of 'minor' significance. For a customer, this may be the end of the world - files are gone, data is missing or modified and they feel victimized.

What scares system administrators is the server-wide exploits. This can be a direct attack (perhaps an SSH deamon has a vulnerability?) or this can be the result of an attacker who used a 'localized' exploit to escalate his/her privileges to 'root' level. A server-wide exploit is terrifying for web hosts. While web hosting companies will always tell customers that it is the customers responsibility to backup their files, the web hosting company has a job to do: keeping customer files online & accessible 24x7.

Backups
When the worst possible scenario becomes a reality, the web hosting company will usually turn to its backups. Backups come in many shapes and forms - local harddrives to store backups, remote backups and RAID (though that's not really a backup method... it's a redundancy method to protect against drive failure) are just 3 examples. Many hosts employ combinations of local & remote backups.

The problem is: If you store backups on a local server, an attacker can delete them. But, the cost of storing backups on a remote server is measured in additional administrative time & coordination, the cost of more bandwidth and the cost of the external storage space - this can add up to be an expensive proposition, especially if you are backing up to a remote datacenter at fast speeds - the bandwidth toll is expensive. In a web hosting environment, backing up dozens of servers with data retention spans of 1-3 months can require many TB of storage.

Another important decision is the backup schedule: will you backup everything each night or backup important things each night etc. Backing up an entire server each night would increase the CPU load, require much more storage and more bandwidth. Another option is backing up website files (the bulk of the data) once a month and everything else each night. This will help reduce the storage, bandwidth & CPU requirements, but the result will be that you may have to settle for a 1 month old backup if your files are removed.

The moral of the story:

Customers: Keep your scripts updated! Help provide a first line of defense for the server that your website is on. ALWAYS keep backups of your website data on your computer.

Web Hosting Companies: Keep your servers updated! Make sure that you update nightly & that you have good practices in place to help detect, quarantine and recover from an attack.

"I would like to recommend hostgator.com, to anyone looking for a cheap host
with fast support and reliable servers. Recently I had to switch hosts and was
hunting for a new one when I received an email about a post I had made a while
back, they offered me a free 30 days to test them out, and the experience was
excellent. Coincidently it doesn't work out for me to be hosted there due to the
fact that just this morning my comic site was linked to by Penny-Arcade and I
consumed all of Pentium 2.4ghz 1gig Ram server in the space of a few hours. due
to this I had to be kicked off there server to keep it running... I would still
recommend them, as the time I was there the support was very fast and there was
no downtime."

Installing System Center Essentials 2007

Mar 07, 2008 2:49 PM PST
For some time, Microsoft has focused on large enterprises and small business, as evidenced by products such as Small Business Server. The midmarket (500 PCs, a couple dozen servers) has very similar needs as smaller and larger enterprises, but faces unique challenges. Whereas Microsoft provides some specific products for smaller organizationsincluding the aforementioned Small Business Servermidmarket organizations have had to utilize full-fledged enterprise tools often without the benefit of large IT staffs or significant server infrastructures to do so.
Enter the "Essentials" line, which is targeted
at midmarket IT organizations. I'm not sure if all of Microsoft's mid-market
focused endeavors will use the word "Essentials" but so far, this has
been the case. For the monitoring, system management, and software deployment
side of the house, Microsoft has released System Center Essentials 2007. In
this article, I'll explain the purpose and features of this product, outline
its system requirements and limitations and walk through a sample installation.

Cpanel takes control of Windows servers

Fri, 19 Oct 2007 01:43:47 +0000
Cpanel, one of the leading providers of control panels for Linux and FreeBSD web hosting servers has announced that it would be releasing a beta version of a new Cpanel Server Suite that would be its first Microsoft Windows Server® 2008-based product line.
A Slashbot job advert seems to suggest that Cpanel is recruiting Windows application ...]

My advice for most dedicated servers would be this: go for the one that has the most RAM. Then only try to compare processors. RAM is much more important than you'd think for servers, especially if you have database driven apps.

Earlier this year, the company acquired clients from US host Stargate and midPhase Services Inc.’s Shared and Virtual Private Server businesses. UK-2 Group has been a significant player in the British and European hosting markets for many years, and recently underwent a large restructure, making important organizational changes in readiness for customer growth plans and challenging the bigger hosting brands. UK-2 is one of the largest domain registrars in the UK having registered over 1 million domain names.

8 Drawbacks to Free Web Hosting

Thu, 13 Mar 2008 12:26:32 GMT
Being that I own a web hosting company, I frequently surf through online forums replying to people’s hosting questions. Of all the questions I answer, I see one that appears over and over again, what are the drawbacks of free web hosting?

Recommended exchange server Items

If you know anything about hosting or have been looking for a host I am sure
that you have some how or some way landed on the hostgator website. hostgator
has been around since 2002 and they have made their web presence very strong,
for example type in any hosting related keyword and I am sure that you will find
them in a google ad or in the top of the search engines. hostgator offers a lot
of variety to their customers so there is a lot to choose from. hostgator offers
three basic plans for the average consumer and website owner; they also offer a
wide range of reseller packages and dedicated servers for the larger customers.

hostgator offers a fairly basic plan for 4.95$ (When paid 3 years in advance) or
8.95$ if paid month to month, this plan offers 350GB of disk space and 3000GB of
bandwidth but incredibly that only let you host one domain so this package is
virtually worthless. The next plan up which they call the baby offers 600GB of
disk space and 6000GB of monthly bandwidth and costs 9.95$ per month if you pay
month to month. If you pay for 1 year in advance you can get this package at
119.40$. This plan of hostgator is one of the most famous plans in the web
hosting industry. This plan offers unlimited domains to be hosted on your
account and also offers some upgraded features from the very basic plan
including unlimited pop3 email accounts, unlimited ftp accounts, unlimited sub
domains, and unlimited parked domains, it also offer ninety nine point nine
percent server uptime compared to the guaranteed ninety nine point five percent
guaranteed uptime offered with the most basic plan. The next thing that they
offer is the swamp plan which gives you the user 1000GB of disk space and
unlimited monthly bandwidth and offers chili soft asp which the other plans do
not offer, in addition the swamp plan also offers private ssl a feature that
most other hosting companies don't offer and costs 14.95$ per monthif paid
monthly or yearly.

hostgator also offers some dedicated servers for proxies and things of that
nature, they are quite expensive though compared to the competition and this is
a whole different market compared to the basic hosting. One nice feature of the
hostgator service is that they offer Cpanel which is quite a good control panel;
this is free compared to some other hosts which charge for the upgrade to a
Cpanel hosting plan. Also like most other hostgator offers a online chat support
and a toll free number that you can call in case you need assistance in setting
up youre hosting or trying to pick a plan out that fits your needs. Over all
hostgator would probably be a eight out of ten because they offer a lot of
features but only on their more expensive plans where as most other hosts will
offer the same features on there low end plans, another big turn off is that
they only allow you to host one domain on there cheapest plan, most hosts allow
unlimited or at least fifteen or twenty.

User Reviews

hostgator is an exceptional hosting provider, never got disappointed, using
dedicated server these days and it is awesome!

Aditya Singh says :

I loved hostgator and their support. It rocks all ways. They truly deserve to be
called the web hosting company on the internet.

Amit Nyamtabad says :

hostgator is one of the biggest hosting company & I am hosting couple of my
sites with these guys. They really do provide good customer support & quality
uptime. Till now my experience has been good with the them.

Rating : A++

GVK says :

Yes, my choice is Host Gator, am with Host Gator since once year. I don't say
they are cheap and best. They are Better than Best :)

Customer Support is awesome, till now i got my problems solved in less than 5-10
mins. Rated: 10

Navjot Singh says :

Excellent Hosting I must say. 100% Uptime. I loved the fact that it gives no
discounts for yearly payment, so it never forces us to buy yearly. So we can
test for a month and then switch to other if we don't like it. But never liking
it...nah such a situation will never arise. I am running a vb forum and never
saw loading touching 2+ even on a shared account. That's excellent considering
at my last host it touched 10-14% usually.

Highly recommended.

Overview

The site that you are looking at now has been hosted by LunarPages since the
first day for more than 5 years! Currently, I also have another two websites
hosted by LunarPages currently. I used to have eight accounts with them! Thanks
to the multiple domain hosting feature, I can now host more websites using less
accounts.

The discussion below is based on my experience with LunarPages as one of their
longest customer. You cannot get more insider information about LunarPages
elsewhere :-)

LunarPages is currently serving over 150,000 customers in over 200 countries. It
was founded in the summer of 2000 when a successful large scale hosting
provider, Add2Net Corporation, expanded its hosting offerings to include shared
hosting.

They are offering two Unix shared hosting plans - Basic Hosting ($7.95) and
Business Hosting ($22.95). The $22.95 plan is a larger plan with unlimited disk
space and 15,000 GB of bandwidth. They also offer other types of hosting
including Windows hosting, VPS hosting, dedicated and semi-dedicated servers but
in this review, I'm just going to write about the $7.95 Basic Hosting Plan,
which I believe is sufficient for 99% of you.

Plan Size and Features

1,500 GB of disk space and 15,000 GB of bandwidth are a lot. Click on the small
picture to view the original wallpaper of Saguaro National Park, Arizona. The
size of the large and high quality picture is 228 KB (kilobyte). With 1,500 GB
of disk space, you can store more than 6.5 million copies of this picture! And
with 15,000 GB/month bandwidth, this picture can be viewed more than 65,700,000
times a month (That's 65.7 million)! The most suitable words to describe 1,500
GB of disk space and 15,000 GB of bandwidth are "More Than Enough!". :-)

There are many web hosts that offer large disk space and bandwidth, but keep in
mind that these web hosts might have funny restrictions such as file size limit,
daily bandwidth limit, or even binary files bandwidth limit (pictures, MP3s,
Flash ...). LunarPages does not have such restrictions with your disk space and
bandwidth usage. You can upload a single 1,500 GB file if you want and you can
finish your 15,000 GB bandwidth in 1 day. As LunarPages founder and CEO, Ron
Riddle told me, "We actually allow people to use everything and we have no
problem offering them what we are currently offering."

Customer Support

It is not the large disk space or bandwidth that make me rank LunarPages as #1
high but its superior customer support! They spend a great deal of money hiring
a lot of support staff to take care of their customers. All of them are very
friendly and knowledgeable. With their effort on customer support, you can
expect the best attention from them.

1. Email support - Simply email support@Lunarpages.com and you will always get a
good reply, no matter if you are a current customer or you just need to ask some
presale questions. Good replies are replies with the exact answer you need. I
suggest that you send them an email right now to see how effective they are. All
email will automatically be tracked by the same ticket system used by the
support help desk. This is my favorite method to request support, because it is
fast, convenient and effective. Email support is available twenty-four hours a
day, seven days a week.

2. Support Help Desk - You will send your inquiry through the use of an online
form. All your inquires will be tracked and recorded using their ticket system.
They even keep a history of all your issues so you can refer back to them
anytime you want. There is also a knowledgebase of frequently asked questions in
the help desk so you can find your answers without creating a support ticket.

They used to be using a third party support help desk system known as DeskPro.
But because they are so rich customer oriented, they decided to dump DeskPro and
develope their own help desk system and call it LunarDesk!

3. Toll-Free Support - Just call 1-877-LunarPAGES if you need phone support for
USA and Canada. For the United Kingdom, call 0800-072-9150 instead. If you live
outside of these countries, you cannot dial the toll free number. They provide
another support line for their international customers: 1-714-521-8150. I have
called them several times and they have no problem talking to me with my slang.

4. Lunar Forums (LunarForums.com)- LunarPages provides forums to let their
customers communicate and help each other. You can find many answers for your
questions. You will also meet many happy customers there. Remember only hosts
that are confident with their services and have many customers dare to set up an
open forum. Currently, the forum has around 35,670 registered users. And
LunarForums is also one of the oldest webmaster forums out there.

I will surely rate their customer support as 10 over 10, or 11 over 10 if I can
:-) Their customer satisfaction speaks for itself. I always stress to my
visitors who write to me that if they are web hosting newbie who need a lot of
attentions and supports, they should always pick LunarPages. This will make sure
that they are fully taken care of in their "early age".

If you have read my reviews or other web hosts, you will notice that I will
state that if you have any unresolved issues with the host, you can always
forward them to me and I will take them directly to the officers. Even though I
have direct contact with many important officers of LunarPages (even the CEO), I
never mention it in my LunarPages review. I don't need to do so because all
LunarPages clients are able to resolve the issue directly with the dedicated
support staffs without going through a third party like me.

Sometime ago, I have submitted a possible SPAM issue to them. To my surprise,
not only that they reply to my email but they have also called me and left me a
voice message! You can click on the 'Play' button below to listen to the voice
message yourself. They did look into SPAM issues seriously to make sure the mail
server is not blocked. They are constantly making sure that all their customers
emails will be sent and received properly.

Contest Code For Feed Subscribers

Sat, 08 Dec 2007 18:48:40 +0000
Just a short update post for anyone who subscribed to our blog’s RSS feed because of the contest.

Don’t you think that such ways of conducting business are unacceptable?

I would be ashamed if I did this to customers of mine, believe me as I

really feel this way. Such business practices are becoming very common

in the hosting business online. Because of it - ASK your question before

you push the payment button. Be aware and really ask ALL of them before.

Fri, 29 Dec 2006 13:35:03 +0000
A webhosting company allows other companies and individuals to host their websites on their servers. This is like renting or leasing an apartment. There are different types of webhosting services but most popular ones are shared webhosting and reseller webhosting. All sites share a common pool of server resources in such a hosting. And just like in the real world, being secure means thinking about security all the time. It starts with basic things like your password. An important rule for you to always keep in mind, is that it is better for you to forget your password and go into the inconveniences of not being able to access your site, than for your password to land in the wrong hands.

Web Hosting Reviews

Fri, 25 Apr 2008 13:48:09 +0000
It’s always difficult to find good and honest reviews of web hosting businesses. Most the sites I have visited are just crap or they are identical copies of things already seen out there. Last week I found the website rebates for web hosting services and actually liked what I saw. I particular liked the Liquidweb ...]

We Welcome Our First ‘Green’ Host - ThinkHost.com

Wed, 02 Apr 2008 02:57:32 +0000

I was recently approached by a hosting company to work with them as an affiliate and after visiting their website, found ThinkHost to have an interesting marketing message - that of an environmentally aware company who are carving themselves out a niche on the basis of a very common theme of concern amongst consumers nowadays.

Whether you are a believer in Global Warming and humankind’s effect on it or not, the fact is, this will doubtless appeal to a great number of people around the world. The company promise to plant a tree for every single customer they sign up and run their business on renewable energy resources. (wind and solar generated power)
